Well… 2022 is here and well underway, friends! With each year, I’m always dying to know what will be in style and what will be kicked to the curb. Will Crocs still be cool? Will I be forced into low rise jeans? What colour is the colour? Should I bring my Juicy Couture tracksuit out of storage yet? So many questions. 

 

After watching multiple fashion shows, reading news articles, tuning into celebrity street style, and scrolling aimlessly on social media, I have put together a list of 22 fashion trend predictions for this year. Check it out:

Dopamine Dressing 

Colour, colour, and some more colour. I think we will see SO much colour this year that it’s not even funny. Pairing bright colours with other bright colours with bright patterns… there’s no rules. I foresee tons of bright greens, blues, yellows, and purples. 

Pearlcore

Taking it back to the sixteenth century… PEARLS. I think pearls will be everywhere – necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings, cardigans, shoes, etc. In the past, pearls have kind of been associated with a more elegant look but this year I think we will see it incorporated into streetwear too. 

Checkerboard

I hope you like checkerboard print because it will be everywhere you look. Checkerboard started to make a comeback at the end of 2021 but I think it will be full force in fun and neutral colours in Spring 2022. This print is so cool and will be on shirts, sweater vests, pants, socks, and shoes. Think the classic Vans Checkerboard Slip-Ons! 

Dark Denim

Push that light denim to the side and make way for dark denim EVERYTHING. I’m talking jeans, shorts, jackets, headbands, and jumpsuits. Dark denim is back in a big way and seems to be the wash everyone wants to get their hands on this year. It gives a very vintage feel and we love that!

Corsets

A trend that originated a long, long time ago as a way to make women appear thinner, is one of this year’s hottest trends. Except this year it’s not meant to make us look thinner but instead to embrace our bodies and SHOW IT OFF. You will see corsets in the form of tops, dresses, and more.

Catsuits

Meowwww! As an alternative to dresses or power suits, catsuits are all the fuss this year. Perfect for an event with a nice heel or to be dressed down for a more casual look with running shoes and a ball cap. Comfortable, simple, body-hugging, and just straight up HOT.

Micro Mini Skirts

A resurgence from the 90s… the micro mini skirt is totally back. I’m not sure how I feel about it quite yet but I’ve seen so many people rock it. Think old school Britney & Paris and that’s exactly how it’s being worn. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a little scared for this one to come back.

Bra Tops

Why wear a shirt when you can just wear your bra? I’ve already been seeing this trend everywhere for this year and I feel that we will only be seeing it more as the weather gets warmer. Layered with an oversized blazer or on it’s own with a high waisted trouser, bra tops are majorrrr this year. 

Cargo Pants

Another little blast from the past – cargo pants. The perfect trend for ditching your purse and carrying everything you need in those big old pockets! I’ve been seeing lots of neutral colours for cargos, but also some muted greens and blues too. A very casual and comfortable trend that I can absolutely get behind.

Mesh Shirts

A 90s cool-girl trend that is back and here to stay for 2022. I think we will see all kinds of fun colours and patterns, as well as different cuts like long sleeves, tshirts, and tanks. Super cute styled on their own or layered with a denim jacket. 

Cutouts

A hot trend in 2021 that is getting even hotter in 2022. Cutouts will be EVERYWHERE, mark my word. Tanks, pants, dresses, shoes, and swimwear. It’s a fun twist on a plain shirt and makes it a little more riskayyyy.

OMG (Oh My Goth)

You can thank Kourtney & Travis or Megan & MGK for this one. Punk/goth fits will be everywhere this year and will include things like leather, fishnet, studs, skull print, and lots of black. Definitely a trend we’ve seen before but I am low key excited to see it make a comeback?? I totally lived this trend the first time around and am curious to see how I will incorporate elements into my wardrobe.

Platform Footwear

If you’re going to buy yourself a pair of shoes this year, make sure they have a platform. The bigger, the better! I think we will see platforms in all types of shoes – heels, oxfords, sneakers, boots, and even slippers. Think less ballet slipper and more Ariana Grande platforms. 

Cardigans as Tops

Parti with cardi! Cardigans always seem to be on trend, but this year I think we will be seeing them styled on their own as a top. A super cute and simple way to wear the cardigan and really falls into the minimalist style that everyone seems to be eating up this year. You can button it all the way up for work or undo a couple buttons if you’re meeting the girls for drinks. 

Feathersssss

Although we’re dealing with feathers, this trend is not flying south for the winter! Feathers are here and they are making it known. Feathers will be so hot this season and can be seen on dresses, jackets, tops, shoes, pants, earrings, and even PJs. I’m not exactly sure how to wash feathers but we can figure that out later!

Baggy Jeans

The baggier, the better. In 2021 it was all about the straight leg jean, now our focus has shifted to a dad jean or wide leg jean… because who wants to wear a tight fitted jean? (Sorry skinny jeans) Baggy jeans are great paired with a crop top or an oversized blazer. 

Psychedelic Prints

The 70s called, they’re back! If it’s psychedelic, it belongs in 2022. I believe these crazy, colourful prints will be seen all over the place this year. For those who have already lived through this phase, they may not be over the moon about this trend returning. But for those who haven’t experienced it yet, we’re excited!

Unisex Suiting

For sure one of my fav trends for this year. Who says we are restricted to just women’s suiting? I want to wear unisex suiting, sign me up! Hailey Bieber is known for rocking a good oversized suit and it’s just sooooo good. All different colours and patterns too. 

Balaclava Nation

I’m sure there will be a lot of eyebrow raises at this one. I’m telling you, balaclavas are in. Not only are they practical as hell, but they are chic. If styled the right way with lots of layers, they are freakin cool. I actually bought myself one the other day and am dying to style it. Stay tuned!

Vegan Leather Everything

A trend that BLEW UP in 2021 and is still going strong into 2022. We ain’t mad about this. The only difference is this year I have been seeing a lot of head-to-toe vegan leather looks, almost embracing that catsuit vibe. I think it’s so chic and can definitely be dressed up or down. 

Oversized Knits

My ultimate weakness this winter – oversized knits. I seriously feel like you can’t have too many. They are so cozy and just the perfect thing to throw on when you have nothing to wear. The colours and patterns are endless too which make it easy to want 100000000. Can’t go wrong here!

Stripes on Stripes on Stripes

Stripes are it for this year. I think we will see stripes absolutely everywhere. The icon, Princess D, rocked stripes beautifully back in the day and she is still a trend setter today because of it. You’ll notice a lot of your fav stores are selling striped pieces like rugby sweaters again. Embrace it, love it, and style it because it’s not going anywhere. 

Well, that’s it for my 2022 fashion trend predictions! I don’t know about you, but I’m excited for it all. Except for maybe the micro mini skirt…. That one I’m nervous for.
