Denim on Denim on Denim

Denim on Denim on Denim

What kind of pants are a shark’s favourite? Denim… denim… denim…denim (Jaws music)

For real though, the sharks know what’s up… denim is my favourite too. Denim has been and will forever be in style – it’s timeless. Of course, the cuts, colours, fits, and fades go in and out of style, but the fabric itself is here to stay, friends. It’s one of those materials that can easily be dressed up or down, worn throughout every season, and is a go-to for almost everyone. In the past, denim has been viewed as a more “casual” look, but I feel that this has changed with more and more fashion icons repping denim in their everyday lives at events, out for dinner, fashion shoots, and runways. I’m not mad about it…

I always look for excuses to whip out my favourite denim. If I’m meeting friends for dinner and want a more elevated look, I love to wear my vintage high rise tapered jeans with an oversized button-up shirt and a kitten heel. When running errands in the city, my go-to is a straight leg jean with a hoodie, a jean jacket or trench coat, and oxfords – chic but V comfortable. And on weekends, I like to switch it up by mixing in some denim overalls with a long sleeve paired with a baseball cap and sneakers.

The denim game these days is STRONG. Especially for women, anyone else agree? I’m really into a lot of the styles I’m seeing in stores. I personally love a good light washed denim – I find them to be a versatile colour for coordinating tops and jackets and gives off a bit of that retro look, which I’m sooooo into. A couple brands that are KILLING the jean game are Agolde, Zara, Citizens of Humanity, GRLFRND, and of course, Levi’s. Levi’s will forever be the KING of denim in my books. I don’t care what anyone says. The fact that my parents, and their parents, and probably their parent’s parents wore them too makes them just so classic. Ugh, just love um!

As a lover of denim, I’m obsessed with letting my jeans be the highlight of my outfit. People often put an emphasis on cute tops with just a plain jean. This isn’t a bad thing and is still super cute – don’t get me wrong! But it’s fun to add a funky pair of jeans into the mix that you can pair with a very plain top… dare I say a little white tee?? Perhaps a boho flair jean, detailed denim with rips or studs, or a bright coloured denim. Let the jeans do the talking too – they have a lot to say!

Maybe it’s because I’m Canadian, but I’m a true believer in denim-on-denim. A lot of people are intimidated by the denim-on-denim combo and I can understand why. It’s a lot of the same material piled on top of each other. HOWEVER, if executed properly, denim-on-denim can steal the show. IT WORKS! Trust me… just ask Britney & Justin circa 2001 AMAs.

I love switching up the colours and washes when I wear denim-on-denim – light washed jeans on the bottom with a medium or dark washed jean jacket on top. I find that by wearing either a white or bright coloured tee with the denim-on-denim helps to break up the material a little bit but doesn’t take away from the overall vibe (great start for denim-on-denim beginners).

Now that fall is upon us, it’s the perfect time to explore different colours and cuts with your denim. Have fun with it! Denim isn’t going anywhere so you might as well learn to love and embrace it. Like you needed another excuse to buy yourself a new pair of jeans….

Until next hump day…

Peace & love!
