Trust me, I hesitate when I say brown is the new black too because black is just so so so classic and goes with everything and anything. BUT a quick show of hands… who is loving brown this season? I seriously am obsesssssssed. It’s a colour I’ve always liked but never really owed a lot of… until now.

Brown was such a trendy colour in the 70s and has made a return to the fashion world in the best way possible in 2021. It’s absolutely everywhere you look – pants, shoes, scrunchies, bralettes, turtlenecks, swimwear, jackets, hats, sweatsuits, you name it. This earthy tone has historically been beaten out but it’s dark hue competitors such as black, navy, and grey. However, brown is the new it colour and its comeback to the fashion world is so major. 

From chocolate, to caramel, to chestnut and every shade in between, we can’t get our hands on the brown pieces fast enough. This is how I’ve been styling some of my brown pieces:

Brown is similar to black in the sense that it works as a neutral and goes with almost every other colour, but it provides a bit more of a warmer look than black does. For example, take a common colour pairing like brown and white – this is a very retro, warm feel. Meanwhile, black and white gives off a much more elegant, formal vibe. See the difference? However, when brown and black are paired together, it’s a match made in heaven. Yup, I said it. I’m a true fan of black and brown together. If done right, it works, people! Don’t knock it till you try it. Trust!! 

Another look I just adore is a full monochromatic brown look. DROOL 🤤 . Brown is one of those colours that you can get away with wearing head to toe and even mismatching the shades. For whatever reason, it just works. Just like you’d wear black-on-black-on-black, try brown-on-brown-on-brown. If you’re a BB (brown beginner), don’t be ashamed. I was a BB not long ago too. I would suggest starting with something simple like a chocolate brown tank or knit sweater. Play around with it and try incorporating it with a couple different outfits. From there, I would then move onto pants or accessories.
